Class 25/33: Step 2 – Removing springs/brushes, magnet & baseplate

  • The next step is to remove the brushes and their springs. This can be left until later but is not a good idea, since they can easily fall out and get lost if left in place. Using a screwdriver and a pair of tweezers (or two screwdrivers), slide open the rotating brush cover with one instrument, whilst simultaneously covering the opening with the other instrument. This prevents the coiled spring inside from shooting out.
  • Ease off on the pressure above the spring and coax it out (either by using tweezers or turning the chassis upside down). With each method, caution is advised – don’t squeeze the spring too tightly otherwise you will damage it. Likewise, be careful if turning the chassis upside down – it the spring dashes for freedom too quickly, you might loose it. After the spring comes out you should be able to remove the carbon brush, which looks like a very short piece of pencil lead.
  • Now repeat the above exercise to remove the spring and brush on the underside of the chassis.

  • Use either your nails or a modelling knife (be careful) to prize off the metal pole pieces and then remove the magnet. Caution applies when using sharp instruments.
  • Unscrew the black plastic baseplate. It has four bolts keeping it in place and four nuts which sit in indentations on the sides of the chassis.
  • This picture still shows the brush in place. However, if you followed the steps correctly above, it should have already been removed. This picture is just to show you where you would find it if you hadn’t already taken it out. In the side of the chassis you can see the recesses into which the nuts slot (2 on each side). Make sure you have all the nuts removed before proceeding, since they are likely to fall out and get lost if not removed. Use the magnet to try and coax them out.
